The Agenda 21 unanimously rejects Port expansion

Image
Translated from: Xàbia al Dia : http://www.xabiaaldia.com/nukexd/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1234 14/05/08 Agenda 21 convened an extraordinary meeting to discuss the proposal by the Ministry to expand Xàbia Port. The Forum as a whole rejected this and any other project which would affect the landscape of Xàbia; its biggest tourist asset. The citizens gave many arguments supporting their negative response, and claimed that the people of Javea must be those who decide their own future. The meeting began with the screening of the Ministry's proposal, and an explanation by the technician from the company managing Ag21, that there was no additional information other than the images displayed, and that the proposal did not include an environmental report, nor any other technical document. She then summarised all the technical decisions and references to Xàbia port that the A21 Forum had taken over its four years of existence. From the Action Plan and co...

This text adapted from article in Xabia al Dia: Conselleria propone un proyecto para el puerto deportivo de Xàbia. All errors mine ! (Chris B-J) http://www.xabiaaldia.com/nukexd/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1212 The Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport has just submitted a project proposal for redevelopment and expansion of the port of Xàbia. The project aims to increase the port basin to more than 60.000m2, opening the arm of the eastern breakwater and closing it at the point where it is now. The "Draft comprehensive redevelopment of the port of Javea and its environment" would include, as well as a private Marina adjacent to the eastern breakwater, several public spaces designed to integrate the port with its urban area. Left: as it is now; Right: Proposed expansion The western wharf will become an exclusively public zone and the current fish market an esplanade for pedestrians. The current car park opposite the fish market would become a two sto...

The challenge for the future of Xàbia

This is a translation so the article "Xàbia debe crear su propio futuro" published in Xabià al Día Magazine in April 2008. Original text: http://www.xabiaaldia.com/nukexd/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1198 This version also on XAD on: http://www.xabiaaldia.com/nukexd/modules.php?name=News&file=article&sid=1199 Xàbia faces a very serious challenge for the coming years. That is, to define a model for the future of the town; and it is the people themselves, the real protagonists, who are responsible for this future evolution. A project of a town that can only be understood with citizen participation, pluralistic debate and which takes sustainability into account. This is the main conclusion of the interesting talk given by the director of the Strategic Plan for the future of Elche, Antonio Martinez, whose discourse stimulated a hundred people gathered at the Casa de Cultura, among whom were the mayor, several Town Hall councillors, representatives of var...

An Alternative Proposal for the Saladar

The facts: - · The Saladar, as it now stands, has an ecological, historic and recreational value. · The Saladar remains as the only level land, some 49 hectares in extent, near to the Javea coast and the key tourist centre of the Arenal · Until now it has remained under developed by virtue its being an area susceptible to irregular flooding. · The current Town Plan of 1990 designates the area as “suelo urbanizable programado” (land for residential usage) · A PAI was presented in 2005, allocating 82% of the area for housing (2000 homes), a new road network and related services. The percentage of area remaining for public and municipal use was thereby greatly reduced. Other Considerations · In the Marina Alta (other than beaches) there are few facilities available for inexpensive opportunities for recreation, parks and sports. · The recreational and sporting value of Javea has to be seen in the context of its relatively low housing density. · ...
